A job that can pay you almost Rs 11 crores, that too offered by Google and requires no degree? Sounds too good to be true. Believe it or not, this position does exist. Google DeepMind’s Polaris team is now on the lookout for brilliant engineers to join them. Tamay Besiroglu, a research scientist at Google DeepMind, took to X to share what qualities the organisation was looking for: No degree was required, just a passion for tech, being smart and able to solve complex problems.

The position reportedly offers a total compensation package ranging from $550,000 to $1.1 million, equivalent to approximately ₹4.6 crore to ₹10.9 crore, depending on currency exchange rates. While the lucrative pay has attracted considerable attention, the hiring team's approach has also sparked interest. Applicants do not need a formal university degree to qualify, as the emphasis is on their ability to solve complex problems rather than their professional titles or years of experience. However, the opportunity has also prompted scepticism online, with some questioning whether securing the coveted role will be as easy as the recruitment message suggests.

Certain users appreciated the notion that employers ought to assess individuals based on their work capabilities instead of the qualifications they possess. Some highlighted the preferred qualifications for the position, which entail experience in competitive programming and math contests like the International Mathematical Olympiad, USAMO, Putnam, and the International Olympiad in Informatics. A user pointed out the seeming inconsistency, stating, "No degree needed and then ‘Preferred qualifications: Experience engaging in competitive programming, math contests (e.g., IMO, USAMO, Putnam, or IOI)’ -> Lol." Covert favouritism for individuals who were knowledgeable about these contests.

The criticism highlights a worry that eliminating the degree requirement does not necessarily ensure that a job is available to all. Candidates might still require years of technical experience, outstanding problem-solving abilities, or participation in competitions that not everyone has had the opportunity to join. Another individual criticised how the announcement was presented, claiming that the job listing should be more straightforward instead of requesting people to disregard its phrasing.
