Relocating to a new city can bring its share of difficulties, but it can also introduce people to new cultures, responsibilities and perspectives. A woman has shared how , Hyderabad and Dubai at different points in her life helped shape her outlook and taught her important lessons about independence, adapting to change and professional networking.
Thejaswini Reddy shared her experience through a video posted on Instagram on her account, @journeyswithvisandtej. In the clip, she explained how each city contributed differently to her personal and professional journey.

Bengaluru introduced her to different cultures
Recalling her childhood, Reddy said she was born in a small village in Andhra Pradesh and studied at a Telugu-medium school. Her family later moved to Bengaluru when she was 10, exposing her to a much wider social and cultural environment.
“I did not learn how to be an adult until I moved to a new city and had to do my own laundry. Here are three cities that I lived in which shaped who I am. First, Bengaluru. I was born in a small village in Andhra, and I was studying in a Telugu-medium school. At the age of 10, my family shifted to Bengaluru, and I was suddenly introduced to so many languages, cultures and people. Bengaluru literally showed me the world when my world was literally my village,” she said.
Hyderabad taught her independence
Reddy said Hyderabad became an important part of her transition into adulthood. Since she had not experienced hostel life during college, she was keen to live independently in another city and took the opportunity when she got a job.
“Second, Hyderabad. I never had a hostel experience during my college days, so I always wanted to live in a different city. So, I took the first opportunity when I got a job. This is also the city where I first joined a gym, bought my own groceries and also did my own laundry,” she added.
The experience helped her take responsibility for everyday tasks, from managing groceries to handling household chores on her own.
Dubai taught her the value of networking
At 31, Reddy moved to Dubai after leaving a stable job in India to join her husband. However, finding employment in the new city proved challenging, with numerous applications failing to receive a response.
“Third, Dubai. At the age of 31, I left my stable job back in India and followed my husband to Dubai. I literally applied to every job there was on the job portal, and I was only ghosted. Eventually, I found a job through a connection whom I had made several years ago. This is where I first understood the power of networking,” she said.
Her experience showed her that professional connections built over time can sometimes open doors that conventional job applications cannot.
'Three cities that shaped how I think'
Reddy summarised the lessons she took from each place in the caption accompanying her Instagram video.“Bengaluru showed me the world beyond my small village in Andhra. Hyderabad taught me adulting through groceries, laundry and the gym. And Dubai taught me how networking actually works after getting ghosted on job applications. Three cities that shaped how I think.”
