Cristiano Ronaldo 's sudden departure from the Portugal camp has left the national team facing questions about what happens next, but one of his most prominent teammates has now made his position clear. Bruno Fernandes has spoken directly to the veteran forward and delivered an emphatic defence of Ronaldo's place in Portuguese football, while insisting that the squad remains united despite the controversy surrounding his exit.
Bruno Fernandes insists Ronaldo remains Portugal's greatest icon
Fernandes revealed that he has remained in direct contact with Ronaldo since the forward left the Portugal camp, with the Manchester United captain making clear that he does not believe the situation should overshadow everything Ronaldo has given to the national team and the country.
“I spoke with Cristiano and told him that he is and will always remain the GREATEST icon of our national team and our country. Our national team is united, not divided. Matters must be resolved internally and conclude well for both parties,” Fernandes said.
The comments come as uncertainty continues to surround Ronaldo's future with Portugal after the 41-year-old made the decision to leave the squad during the Nations League campaign.
Ronaldo's departure followed Portugal's 2–1 victory over Norway, during which the five-time Ballon d'Or winner remained an unused substitute after warming up during the match.
The decision marked the first time in 18 years that Ronaldo had been left out of a competitive starting lineup and then not brought onto the pitch, adding to the tension surrounding his role under head coach Jorge Jesus .
Ronaldo's relationship with Jorge Jesus at centre of dispute
The circumstances surrounding Ronaldo's departure have increasingly centred on his relationship with Jesus, with the forward reportedly holding discussions with the 72-year-old coach and senior figures within the Portuguese Football Federation after the Norway match.
Those discussions ultimately failed to prevent Ronaldo from leaving the national team camp, with the Al-Nassr forward later confirming his decision in a statement posted publicly.
“After the press conference of the national team and following a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team training camp. In time, I will tell all the Portuguese the truth about the reasons that motivated me to leave.”
Ronaldo has not yet provided that fuller explanation, leaving the circumstances of his departure open to further discussion while Portugal continue their Nations League campaign without their long-time captain.
Ronaldo's exit sparks social media fallout
The fallout has extended beyond the Portugal training camp, with reports claiming that the Portuguese Football Federation's official Instagram account lost more than one million followers during the 24 hours after Ronaldo's departure became public.
Ronaldo himself then appeared to add another layer to the situation by liking a social media post that criticised the way the federation and coaching staff had handled his recent involvement with the national team.
The Portuguese Football Federation responded to the growing reaction with a brief statement focused on the team's immediate responsibilities rather than the controversy surrounding Ronaldo's departure.
“The entire delegation remains fully focused on the national team’s upcoming commitments and achieving the defined objectives,” the federation said.
Fernandes' intervention has now provided one of the clearest public messages from inside the Portugal camp, with the Manchester United captain making his view of Ronaldo's standing unmistakable while calling for the dispute to be resolved internally.
