Gandhinagar: State power generation utility, Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd ( GSECL ), has signed an MoU with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd ( NPCIL ) for developing a nuclear power project of around 4 ,000MW at Dhuvaran in Anand district .

The project is expected to entail a potential investment of around Rs 1 lakh crore and marks GSECL’s first foray into nuclear power generation. The MoU was signed in Mumbai on Thursday in the presence of energy minister Rishikesh Patel , energy and petrochemicals department additional chief secretary and GSECL chairman Ashwani Kumar, and NPCIL chairman and managing director V Rajesh .

Under the agreement, GSECL will assess land and supporting infrastructure for the proposed project, while NPCIL will undertake site surveys and technical studies and provide expert assistance. Further work will depend on the project’s technical and economic feasibility as well as statutory clearances.

The proposed nuclear capacity is expected to provide Gujarat with a steady source of power as the state expands its renewable energy capacity. Gujarat has set a target of installing more than 100GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with solar and wind generation requiring complementary sources of continuous power to support grid stability.

An official statement said the proposed nuclear project will operate under the Shanti Act, 2025, whose rules were notified on Aug 14. The legislation provides for licensing of nuclear power plants, fuel production and handling of nuclear material by entities authorised by the central govt, including govt departments, companies and joint ventures.

The Dhuvaran project, once cleared, will add around 4,000MW to Gujarat’s power generation capacity and marks a significant shift in the state’s energy mix, which has seen substantial expansion in solar and wind power.
