New York, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : Alexander Zverev has made his way to the final of the 2026 US Open, defeating Karen Khachanov in the semifinals with a score of 6-3, 7-6(7), 7-6(6).
The match showcased Zverev's dominant performance, especially at the start, where his powerful serve provided a solid foundation, while his baseline game consistently pressured Khachanov.
Initially, Zverev took control, breaking Khachanov at a critical moment to clinch the first set. However, the Russian player responded strongly in the second set. After falling behind 0-2, Khachanov increased his aggression from both wings, turning the tide to lead 5-4. Zverev, undeterred, fought back to force a tiebreak.
The tiebreak proved to be a test of nerve. Zverev squandered two set points but capitalized on his third opportunity, edging closer to the final. Khachanov played some of his best tennis during this phase but Zverev maintained his composure under pressure.
The third set mirrored the earlier battles, with Zverev leading at 5-4 and later 6-5. Khachanov held his serve both times, pushing the match into another tiebreak. Despite Khachanov initially leading 6-4 with two set points, Zverev responded fiercely and ultimately secured victory after two hours and 57 minutes of intense play.
This marks Zverev's return to the US Open final six years after his last appearance in 2020, where he lost to Dominic Thiem. This final will be Zverev's sixth at a Grand Slam, and he aims to capture his first US Open title and second Grand Slam overall after winning the Australian Open earlier this year.
