Netflix has cancelled five series in 2026 so far, as the company continues to tighten its content strategy around viewership and cost.
The decisions follow the streamer’s long-held stance that renewals depend on performance, with CEO Ted Sarandos previously stating that shows must match audience size with budget to survive.
Here’s a breakdown of the titles that won’t be returning:
The Abandons
The big-budget Western, starring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, was cancelled after production challenges. Creator Kurt Sutter exited before completion and later criticised the decision, calling it a missed opportunity for the platform.
“Dear Netflix, Next time fear compels you to choose the algorithm over a creator’s vision, remember how that choice unraveled a potentially beautiful project,” the creator wrote, per Deadline.
The Vince Staples Show
Despite strong reviews, scoring 94% with critics and 88% with viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, the series struggled to reach a wide audience. Created by Vince Staples, the show ranked low in overall viewership, leading to its cancellation after two seasons.
Alice in Borderland
The popular Japanese sci-fi drama has officially ended, despite an open-ended third season. Star Tao Tsuchiya had earlier suggested the story may have already reached its natural conclusion.
“I felt like that was a great way to finish the story,” she explained to THR, “So I was kind of surprised when they presented season three to me!”
Billionaires’ Bunker
The Spanish psychological thriller was dropped after one season, with weak audience retention and negative reviews cited as key reasons behind the decision.
Miss Governor
Created by Tyler Perry, the series was confirmed cancelled by lead Terri J. Vaughn, who said she was “heartbroken” despite believing in the show’s message.
“I have to admit, I was quite heartbroken when I first got the info,” the actress said in an Instagram video. “I really worked my ass off to make that show come to fruition.”
The cancellations reflect Netflix’s continued push towards globally scalable content, as the platform refines its 2026 slate.
