Synopsis

A laid-off professional looking for a new job shared how a promising interview opportunity unexpectedly fell through after the recruiter handling it lost his own job. The candidate was first asked to reschedule, and when the new date arrived, the recruiter did not show up. Later, the candidate discovered the recruiter’s email had been deactivated and his profile marked as “open to work.”

In a job market where layoffs and hiring freezes continue to affect both companies and candidates, even a confirmed interview is no longer a guarantee of opportunity. A recent post shared on Reddit highlights just how unpredictable things have become, after a job seeker’s long-awaited interview fell apart in an unexpected way.

A hopeful lead after layoffs

The user, who said he has been working in the video game industry for nearly a decade, explained that he had recently been affected by widespread layoffs. While searching for new opportunities, he was approached by a recruiter from what he described as a “well-known professional social media network”.

According to the post, the recruiter reached out to discuss a role in a gamification team and quickly scheduled a call for the next day. For someone actively looking for work, the message felt like a timely break.

However, the situation began to shift almost immediately.

The candidate said he joined the scheduled call, only to wait for 15 minutes without any response. When he followed up, he discovered the meeting had been pushed back by three weeks without prior notice.

Despite the inconvenience, he agreed to the new schedule, saying he wanted to stay calm and not risk losing the opportunity.

But the second meeting did not go as planned either.

Recruiter disappears without notice

When the rescheduled interview date arrived, the recruiter again failed to show up. This time, the situation took a more unexpected turn.

The user wrote that when he tried to reach out via email, he found that the recruiter’s email address had been deactivated. On checking the recruiter’s profile on the same platform, he noticed an “open to work” tag, suggesting the recruiter himself was no longer employed.

“I was left high and dry,” the user shared, describing the moment he realised the hiring process had collapsed entirely.

Hoping to salvage the situation, the candidate reached out to another recruiter through a contact and reapplied for the same role. However, he said his application was rejected at the screening stage, despite having relevant experience.

He admitted the experience was disappointing. “Not gonna lie, this one stung a bit. I was really excited about the role, and it’s hard to go from ‘this could be a great fit’ to nothing because of things completely outside your control.”

Internet reacts: ‘Candidates left in limbo’

The post quickly drew responses from others familiar with similar situations. One user pointed out how such disruptions affect candidates directly, saying, “When a recruiter gets canned, all their candidates are unexpectedly left in limbo.”

Another comment highlighted the emotional toll of such experiences, stating, “Getting ghosted is bad enough, but losing your shot because the recruiter vanished is next level of bad luck… job market is a mess right now.”
