PTC Web Desk: In a historic moment for Japan, Sanae Takaichi, the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), won a key vote in the country’s lower house on Tuesday, putting her on course to become Japan’s first female Prime Minister.
Takaichi secured 237 votes in the 465-member lower house, comfortably achieving a majority needed to form the new government. She is also expected to be confirmed by the upper house shortly, following which she will be formally appointed Japan’s 104th prime minister after an audience with the Emperor.
The 63-year-old lawmaker will succeed Shigeru Ishiba, who stepped down last month after his party suffered a series of heavy election defeats. Ishiba’s resignation opened the door for new leadership within the ruling party, which continues to hold a strong majority in parliament.
Takaichi, known for her conservative political stance and long association with former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, has pledged to focus on economic revival, national security, and strengthening Japan’s global partnerships. Her elevation marks a major step forward for women in Japanese politics, where top leadership roles have long been dominated by men.
If confirmed, Takaichi will make history as Japan’s first woman to hold the office of PM, a milestone that is being widely celebrated across the country and internationally.
